Pharises Stud

English Pointer Puppy Pack

Introduction

Thank you for choosing to buy your puppy from Pharises Kennels. We have been breeding quality show dogs for the past 16 years and our English Pointers have become our specialist and only breed. Although we do not know everything by any means, we have chosen to share with you some of our knowledge based on raising our own pointers. The following booklet contains some essential information, like your puppies pedigree, which you need to keep safe. Also some tips and training points to help your puppy settle into his/her new home as quickly and easily as possible. Of course if you find you would like to chat about a particular issue you are having with your dog or even just a chat to keep us updated on how your dog is developing we will always be close to hand and welcome your call.

We advise you to register your dog with a vet as soon as possible and transfer the dogs’ registration into your own names with the kennel club. Your puppy will have 6 weeks of health care insurance free of charge and this will be activated when you change the ownership registration with the kennel club.

Your puppy has been wormed with Panacur liquid at two and  four weeks old and just before you picked them up at eight weeks. We would advise you take your pup for a vet check and seek professional advice on worming but we will be worming our own puppy at 12 and 18 weeks and then every 3-6 months. You will need to know your dogs’ weight to ensure you give them the correct dose. All puppies require worming as our pointers tend to eat and roll in the most disgusting things, being beautiful does not change their natural hunting tendencies.

Your puppies will need his or her standard vaccinations at 12 weeks, these will be repeated at 16 weeks. You must not allow your dog to go to parks etc or come into contact with other dogs until after this time. We also do not like to put our dogs into heavy exercise until they are 6-9 months as they are developing strength in their bones and joints until this time. Your vet can also microchip your dogs quite cheaply to ensure ease of identification if they ever wander or get lost at this time. To get a passport for international travel your pup will need a rabies vaccination and then 30 days later a blood test to ensure rabies antibodies. Your vet will then issue a passport when they are happy your dog is properly protected.

Your puppy has been fed four times a day. In the morning we give him fish and puppy complete biscuits with approx 21% protein. What is important in the biscuit is the protein content not the cost!!! We feed our dogs meat with biscuit because pointers can be very difficult to keep weight on in their early years due to faddy eating. Your dog will not starve itself to death and I force fed their mother to eat until she was 18 months old to keep her in show condition like an overprotective mother (I do NOT recommend this). I recommend you give a feed and if it is not eaten you either put some cling film over and keep it in a fridge until the next meal or you throw it away. DO NOT LEAVE FOOD DOWN and allow them to pick!!!

Your pup can now be feed three times a day. Feed a meat feed in the morning i.e. biscuits and fish or meat. A milky feed at 1.00, i.e. a little milk and half or one weetabix and another meat feed at 7.00.

Examples of meat : tin of pilchards, butchers tripe mix, cheap mincemeat from the freezer of any supermarket etc. is often cheaper than dog food.

We boil any left over vegetables and peelings for the dogs’ tea and when your dogs are fully grown they may have a chicken carcass boiled until soft. They will manage these bones easily and minimise waste. Do not ever give them bones from larger animals however.

Always allow access to fresh water.

Your puppy will need to go to the toilet first thing in the morning when he awakes and at regular intervals during the day. Newspaper or puppy trainer pads can be useful if placed near a back door and gradually outside. Your puppy is like a baby and has very little control of his bladder, when he needs a wee he will need one straight away so please be patient during this process. Kindness and persistence is the way forward.

We are sure you will soon get to know your pup as he or she is developing well and your relationship with them will enable you to train them easily. Pointers are very sensitive dogs and do not require firm handling. Being assertive and being aggressive with your puppy are different and although sometimes training a puppy is frustrating please do NOT rub his nose in any toilet accidents or smack him for being a little excitable. We recommend that you purchase a training manual or any material by Ceaser Millan. Pointers are known for biddable and docile temperaments and your puppies parents are fantastic canine people!! You may wish to discuss any behavioural difficulties with your vet but our ethos is “There are no bad dogs, just misguided ownership” Please call us for any specific advice!

Although when we sell our puppies it is with a permanent home in mind, sometimes personal circumstances mean it is untenable to keep a dog. Please allow us to help re home any animals from our kennels, although we would not return your purchase fee we may be able to offer practical support through what will be a stressful time for both yourselves and your dog.

Finally we would like to wish you and your puppy all the best in the future and hope they bring you as much pleasure and companionship as our English pointers bring to us.
